Since 2016, Stop the Raids NYC has raised funds for our community members, friends, and loved ones who are still held captive as a result of the numerous predatory raids on NYCHA housing throughout the city. Many were hit with bogus conspiracy charges and forced into plea deals, criminalizing Black & Brown youth and funneling them into the prison industrial complex.
While fortunately many community members have returned home, there are still some who faced extremely long sentences, and those who have been continually targeted by the cops and the trap-like supervised release system, and put back into prison slavery. However, the hype around the cases has died down, and the regular funds we received have slowed down. We are SO grateful to those who have continued to donate! We need a few more donors to keep funding our loved ones until their release. We send $35/month to 8 remaining comrades who face time up until 2030; without further funds we will be unable to provide support after September 2023.
In the aftermath, impacted families & individuals are financially burdened with the expenses of surviving incarceration. Commissary funds, or funds used to purchase necessities, can be a matter of life or death. People often may not be able to eat chow food, which is served at far below the required amount for human adults. Commissary also serves as a way to communicate with loved ones outside, get appropriate clothing, and can be an assurance of safety, as without funds people may need to trade their safety for necessities.
